The sea had stopped making a noise.
Nora Ellis stood in the kitchen with one hand under the cold tap, listening for the sound that usually reached the flat from the bottom of Quay Street. At night, once the traffic had gone, water dragged stones down the beach in long untidy breaths. She had complained about it the first week they lived here, before she grew used to falling asleep to it. Now its absence had got her out of bed.
The tap coughed against her fingers. Behind her the fridge went quiet, and the light over the cooker blinked twice and stayed on.
